§ 4. My Native City / Моє рідне місто

Kyiv is my native city. It's an ancient city. The archeologists discovered settlements of the 5th century on its territory. That's why it is considered that Kyiv is about 15 hundred years old.

There is a legend about its foundation. Once. there lived three brothers, Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv and their sister Lybid. They founded a city on one of the hills above the Dnieper and called it Kyiv after the eldest brother. And in honour of the younger brothers one hill was named Shchekavitsa, and another — Khorevitsa, while the river was called Lybid after their sister.

Ancient Kyiv was a large commercial centre of the East Slavs. Its position on the important water route helped its trade.

During the reign of Prince Volodymyr the city expanded greatly. Under the rule of Prince Yaroslav the Wise ancient Kyiv increased more than 7 times. Many churches, cathedrals, and monasteries appeared at that time.

As Kyiv is a very ancient city, there are a lot of places of historical importance in it. Among them there are the Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra, the Golden Gate, the St. Sophias Cathedral.

When somebody comes to see Kyiv and asks me to show him my native city, I am always in despair. For those who love Kyiv so dearly as I do, it's very difficult to choose some places of the particular interest.

If the day is fine and the sky is cloudless, I'd like to take my guest to the Golden Gate. It is situated in the centre of the city. From the top of the Gates we can admire a splendid view of the city.

I also like the St. Sophia's Cathedral. Prince Yaroslav the Wise is buried there. His Tomb always reminds me about the glory of the first state on the territory of our country, about Kyiv Rus. I dream about the time when the historians find the famous library of Yaroslav the Wise.

I usually like to take my guests to Andrew Street. As for me this is the most Kyiv street of all. I can't imagine the festivities on the Kyiv Day without having a walk along Andrew Street.

I am proud when I am walking along the streets where there are so many memorial boards telling us about the famous Kyivites who were walking along the same streets.

Kyiv has changed greatly recently. There appeared a lot of small caffees, cosy restaurants, different shops and stalls. Their bright colourful signboards look so alluring. I hope that soon time will come when the standard of life of our people will permit everybody to enjoy everyday's small joys.

Київ — моє рідне місто. Це стародавнє місто. Археологи виявили поселення V ст. на його території. Саме тому вважається, що Києву близько 1500 років.

Існує легенда про його заснування. Колись там жили три брати: Кий, Щек, Хорив і їхня сестра Либідь. Вони заснували місто на одному з пагорбів над Дніпром і назвали його Києвом на честь старшого брата. На честь молодших братів один пагорб було названо Щекавиця, а інший — Хоревиця, а річка стала носити назву Либідь на честь їх сестри.

Стародавній Київ був великим торгівельним центром східних слов'ян. Його розташування на важливому водному маршруті допомогло торгівлі.

Протягом царювання князя Володимира місто дуже розширилося. Під владою князя Ярослава Мудрого стародавній Київ збільшився більше, ніж у 7 разів. У той час з'явилося багато церков, соборів і монастирів.

Оскільки Київ — дуже стародавнє місто, у ньому є багато місць історичної важливості. Серед них — Києво-Печерська лавра, Золоті ворота, Софіївський собор.

Коли хто-небудь прибуває побачити Київ і просить мене показати йому моє рідне місто, я завжди опиняюся у відчаї. Для тих, хто любить Київ так сильно, як я, дуже важко вибрати особливо цікаві місця.

Якщо день сонячний і небо безхмарне, я б повів мого гостя до Золотих воріт. Вони розташовані в центрі міста. Згори воріт ми можемо насолодитися розкішним видом міста.

Мені також подобається Софіївський собор. Там похований князь Ярослав Мудрий. Його могила завжди нагадує мені про славу першої держави на території нашої країни, про Київську Русь. Я мрію про час, коли історики знайдуть знамениту бібліотеку Ярослава Мудрого.

Мені зазвичай подобається водити моїх гостей Андріївським узвозом. Як на мене, ця вулиця найбільш характерна для Києва. Я не уявляю свята на День Києва без прогулянки уздовж Андріївського узвозу.

Я гордий, коли я ходжу вулицями, де є так багато меморіальних дошок, що говорять нам про знаменитих киян, які ходили тими ж вулицями.

Київ нещодавно дуже змінився. З'явилося багато маленьких кафе, зручних ресторанів, різних магазинів і кіосків. Їх яскраві барвисті вивіски виглядають дуже чаруюче. Я сподіваюся, що скоро настануть часи, коли стандарт життя наших людей дозволить кожному насолодитися звичайними маленькими радощами.
